iTunes Audio Fix

Published by mkennedy at 2:28 pm under iTunes

I got a new laptop to go with my new job, so I’ve been spending a bit of time in the last two weeks installing software that I can’t live without. Of course, iTunes was high on the list, but when I downloaded and installed the latest version (WinXP v4.7.1) the audio playback was horrible — jumpy, skipping, ugly crud. Ugh! The problem was definitely with iTunes since I could play the same files flawlessly with Windows Media Player.

I did some searching on the web to look for solutions and finally found a post on iPodLounge.com that gave me the answer. It seems that there was a setting in the QuickTime software that is now bundled with iTunes that was causing the problem.

Here’s the steps that I took that fixed the problem for me:

  1. Close iTunes
  2. Open QuickTime, go to Edit > Preferences > QuickTime preferences…
  3. Select “Sound Out” from the dropdown menu
  4. Under choose a device for playback select “waveOut”
  5. Close QuickTime and restart iTunes. All should be well again.
